African Palliative Care Education Scholarship for Nursing and Social Work
As part of our mission to expand the availability of hospice and palliative care in Africa and globally, Global Partners in Care has a special scholarship program to support the African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in providing education scholarships to further the knowledge and skill of African nurses and social workers in the provision of palliative care.
In many African nursing and social work courses, there is no training which exposes the students to palliative care. Formal training in palliative care is greatly needed to provide nurses and social workers with the much needed palliative care skills to handle patients with life threatening illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer.
The fund was originally established in 2011 by generous donations from various donors. These donors included major gifts from the National Association of Social Workers in honor of Dr. Bernice Catherine Harper and anonymous donation in honour of the palliative care service of Nurse Catherine Defillipi in South Africa.
To date, the scholarship program has benefited 14 nurses and 9 social workers who have undertaken formal palliative care training. The scholarship program has also supported 10 nurses to attend the Palliative Care Association of Uganda’s bi-annual conference. Scholarship recipients have come from various countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa, Malawi and Cameroon.
